Training for Generalist Advisers
Learning to be a Generalist adviser involves a great deal of commitment to training and learning and a willingness to learn and develop is central to being an effective and successful adviser. You will therefore be expected to complete the CAB Generalist Adviser Worker training programme and undertake further training as required by the Winchester bureau and our national organisation Citizens Advice.
This process can last up to 9 months with volunteers working one session in the Bureau and one session (after working through at home or in the Bureau on some self-learning training packs) with our Training Officer. As well as this there are 4 days, usually over 2 weeks, which includes learning about interviewing skills.
Ongoing Training
All advisers periodically assess how they are doing using competencies for their role. This is to identify further training and development needs. Things are always changing and you will need to spend some time reading in order to keep yourself informed.
It is not possible to learn all there is to know, so we have an Advice
Session Supervisor who supports trainees and experienced workers alike to
ensure quality of advice. All training is free and any travel expenses incurred
will be covered.
